What
You Need to Know About Safe Baby Feeding
The
time you spend feeding your child helps form
the amazing bond the two of you will share all
your lives. But some modern baby feeding techniques
and methods actually put your child at risk.
Chemicals and other harmful factors increase
the potential for some diseases and other health
impediments to affect your child's normal growth.
Presented
below are some important ideas and information
to consider as you feed your infant child. |
Breastfeeding
is better than formula in almost all cases.
Recent
medical research indicates that breastfeeding offers
vast and substantive advantages over giving a child
formula in all but the rarest of medical conditions.
Breastfeeding has been linked to the prevention or
avoidance of asthma, allergies, diabetes, and Hodgkin's
lymphoma. Proteins and amino acids found in breast
milk have been found to help fight bacterial infections.
Some
child's health experts also postulate that breastfeeding
helps prevent obesity. Since breastfeeding times are
rarer and more difficult than simply giving a bottle,
the child's food intake does not swell to excessive
levels.
When
to use formula
Doctors
may recommend baby formula over breastmilk in certain
rare instances when the breast milk might prove an
allergic jeopardy to the child.
All
baby formulas sold in the United States are expected
to meet strict nutritional guidelines established
by the Food and Drug Administration. Formula must
included regulated servings of protein, niacin, folic
acid, vitamins A, C, D, E, K, B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin),
B6 and B12. Certain minimum amounts of calcium, iodine,
and iron should also be included.
Use
glass feeders to avoid potentially toxic chemicals
in plastics.
A
major debate presently swirling through consumer protection
circles concerns the presence of Bisphenol A in plastic
baby bottles. The nonprofit Environmental Working
Group reports that many plastic baby bottles sold
throughout the United States leak the chemical into
their fluid contents during heating. They recommend
instead using a glass bottle with a plastic nipple.
(Latex rubber nipples can potentially trigger an allergic
reaction.)
Bisphenol
A has also been found in the lining of liquid baby
formula containers. Experts urge parents to buy only
the powdered varieties of formula to prevent the Bisphenol
A from reaching the child through the liquid formula
A
2007 report by the Center for the Evaluation of Risks
To Human Reproduction expressed concern about exposure
to Bisphenol A leading to brain development problems
and adverse behavior in infants and children. A similar
report by the National Institute of Health that same
year also expressed misgivings about Bisphenol A presence
in baby bottles and baby bottle liners.
